Now, let’s talk about ring restoration and jewelry repairs separately, so you can learn more about what the process entails and the different types of ring restoration and jewelry repairs we offer.
WHAT IS RING RESTORATION?
Ring restoration covers a wide range of services. It really depends on the extent of the damage. Some rings may simply need to be cleaned and polished to remove scratches and dirt, while others require stone replacement, stone polishing, shank restoration, plating, or enameling. No matter what the case may be for your ring, the goal is always the same, to lovingly restore your ring back to new.
Ring restoration services are very common because rings are prone to banging and rubbing against things. After all, a ring goes on your hand and you use your hands all day long.
Diamonds By Raymond Lee and Raymond Lee Jewelers understand better than anyone just how important a ring is for the owner. As such, we treat each and every ring restoration project with the utmost care. We aim for perfection every time and we have never failed in our nearly 40 years of doing ring restoration work.
COMMON RING RESTORATION REPAIRS
Here are some of the most common types of ring restorations that we do for customers in Boca Raton:
Clean & Polish:
Over time, rings will get scuffed and dirty. They may even tarnish from exposure to chemical compounds, water and even air. To fix this, we clean the ring with industry-grade machinery that uses vibrations and a specific chemical compound to push the dirt from small spaces within the ring to the surface so they can be wiped away. After that, we buff off a very thin surface layer to remove scratches and oxidation. For rings, we use a high polish finish most of the time, which makes the ring shiny and new.
Note: For gold rings, polishing does remove some of the gold. This is a given. However, if done sparingly (and carefully), it is very negligible. As for platinum, polishing doesn’t remove any of the metal when done by professionals like us. It simply brings the platinum back to its original condition, removing that frosted, dull patina.
Stone Replacement:
Sometimes stones fall out of rings, so they’ll need replacing. If you still have the stone that fell out, we can set it back in and tighten the setting so it doesn’t come loose again. But if you don’t, thanks to our enormous selection of loose stones, we will find the perfectly fitting diamond or gemstone for your ring, while also meeting your budget requirements. The stone will be set in your ring and tightened for a seamless look.
We can also add gemstones into rings that previously didn’t have any stones. Our expert jewelry maker can restore your ring, but with a new and improved look!
Stone Polishing:
Gemstones can wear down over years of wear. If you have an heirloom piece that has been in your family for a long time, you will definitely notice this. A quick buff using state-of-the-art equipment will bring the stone back to its original radiant appearance. Our skillful jeweler (aka lapidary) will painstakingly remove any scratches and soften chips with a polishing too.
Plating:
White gold rings have a coating of rhodium to give them that beautiful white sheen. The only downfall to the rhodium plating is that it’ll eventually wear off. When this happens, your ring will turn a yellow-gray, which is the actual gold alloy. This base metal is not a particularly beautiful color, especially when it contrasts with the rhodium plating left over. So, you will likely want to have the rhodium re-plated. We can handle that for you on-site while you wait. All we have to do is polish the ring to remove all of the rhodium plating and create a smooth surface. Then we submerge the ring in a plating tank, which will fuse a new rhodium plating over the surface of your ring.
Prong Repair:
Prongs are the tiny bits of metal that hold your ring’s stones in place. They may become loose or break over time. We can easily fix your prongs for you while you wait. We will make sure your stones are secure and the prongs look just like they did when new.
Ring Shank Replacement:
If you have a ring with a very thin band (this is not unusual for older rings that have been worn for decades) or your ring has a crack in the band, it’ll need a ring shank replacement. This involves removing the original band and replacing it with with a thicker, stronger band. Depending on the ring, it may be just a piece of the band or the entire length of the band. Any metal that we remove will be melted and put back into the new band, to save cost and ensure you don’t lose any of the intrinsic value of your precious metal.
Custom Work:
When it comes to ring restoration and customizations, we can do anything imaginable at Diamonds By Raymond Lee and Raymond Lee Jewelers in Boca Raton. JEWELRY REPAIR
Fine jewelry is prone to wear and tear. This is because they are made from precious metals, which are softer and more malleable. On the flip side, that makes them easier to fix too!
At Diamonds By Raymond Lee and Raymond Lee Jewelers, we can fix all kinds of jewelry: rings, bracelets (and anklets), necklaces, pendants, and earrings. So, if you have jewelry you no longer wear because it is broken, bring it in! There’s no point to let a valuable item lay around when you can fix it (or sell it!).
The most common jewelry repair that we do are as follows:
Ring Resizing: For rings that fit too tight or too lose, we can easily resize it up or down. After we are finished, you won’t be able to tell it was resized by looking at it, you will only know it was done because it fits you properly!
Note: There are three options for ring resizing: cutting & soldering, sizing beads, and spring inserts. We only use the latter for rings that have diamond encircling the entire length of the band. We will discuss with you the best option for your ring beforehand.
Chain Repair: Whether it is a broken necklace or broken bracelet, your chain can be repaired in no time. It’s important that you take it to a reputable place like Diamonds By Raymond Lee and Raymond Lee Jewelers because if your chain is repaired poorly, it will not be as strong as it was before. Moreover, certain types of chains like rope chains or cable chains are much harder to fix, so you will want an absolute expert working on it or you may be left with a sloppy job.
Prong Repair: If your jewelry has diamonds or gemstones, those stones are likely held in place by prongs. At some point in your jewelry’s life, those prongs may break or become loose. If so, they need to be replaced, re-tipped or tightened. This is a very easy job that can be done while you wait. After it’s finished, you won’t be able to tell there was anything ever wrong with your prong. The job will be done to perfection.
Be sure to get your diamond jewelry checked every year to make sure all your prongs are tight and undamaged. That way you will never lose a stone. If you bring your jewelry to us, we will check each prong and make sure they are good to go!
