It’s all about Patek these days. Plain Janes and Bustdown Pateks. If you are the type who likes to be seen from a mile away, expect a powerful adulation for the watch of this feature – it’s a flooded baguette diamond bustdown Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 in White Gold.

Baguette Diamond White Gold Patek Nautilus: Diamond Talk

First, let’s talk about the diamonds, There are hundreds of them, all baguette-cut, meticulously set by hand. A job like this doesn’t take hours, it takes months from start to finish.

Baguette diamonds were chosen for this customization because that is the latest style in the booming trend that is bustdown Pateks. The only gold you can see on this watch are the Patek ears and crown, the hands, the beveled edges of the dial and bracelet, and the edges of the centerlinks. It adds just the right amount of contrast while leaving this watch looking like pure water.

There are over 100 baguette diamonds on the dial alone. The baguettes are perfectly sized and set to completely cover the dial.  They create a matrix that captivates and pulls you into its hall of mirrors. All that’s left is the date window and white gold hands.

The bezel was done in a way that adds contrast to the watch. The bevels are left in their 18K white gold state, while a channel along the center was drilled and fit with 32 flawless square-shaped baguette diamonds. The larger baguettes of the bezel juxtapose beautifully with the smaller baguettes that make up the dial.

As for the bracelet, it also uses contrast to its advantage, as the rectangular shaped baguettes, which are set in rows, fill the centers of every link, making the edges pop in all of their shine. It’s like water in a King’s goblet. As for the fold-over clasp, it is untouched, proudly displaying the Patek Philippe logo.

All in all this watch is pure water.

Gem-Setter Workmanship

Designing this diamond Patek requires a painstakingly long process. But, just like the watchmakers at Patek, gem-setters who do these kinds of jobs love a good challenge.

First, the design concept was put into place. The goal was to flood the watch with baguettes while keeping the shape and integrity of the Patek Nautilus 5711 fully intact. As mentioned, baguettes were chosen because everyone wants baguettes these days, but not everyone has them.

Choosing the baguettes was next. They needed to follow the contours of the Patek perfectly. So, not only were flawless baguettes a necessity, the size was too. For certain segments of the watch, the baguettes would need to be adapted to their designated place. This greatly adds to the complexity of the job.

Flawless Baguettes

Baguette cut diamonds are step cut diamonds, like emerald cut and Asscher cut diamonds. They are arranged to look like steps, with a large table on top. If a step cut diamond has Excellent polish, Excellent symmetry and a high clarity grade, they shine like no other, refracting light stunningly. Moreover, they create a highly desired “hall-of-mirrors” effect.

Baguettes typically come in two shapes, rectangular or squared and tapered. As tapered are usually only used for accents on engagement rings, squares and rectangulars were the baguettes called to action here.

All in all, baguette diamonds create a unique look. One that is highly coveted by the modern watch and jewelry buyer. Baguettes are renowned for the distinct look they provide…

As the rap game says, when a watch is covered in baguette diamonds, it looks like “water”. Conversely, with round brilliants, it turns a watch white. It looks more like snow. Baguette-cut diamonds have that real icy glass watery look that everyone is talking about in their lyrics.

Invisible Setting

Now, as mentioned, it is not just about the quality of the diamonds, although these baguettes are flawless…

And, it’s not just about the shape of the baguette-cut diamonds either…

It’s also about how the setting is done. If the setting isn’t done right, it’s going to look really bad, no matter how watery the baguettes are.

There are several ways to set baguettes, but the best and most popular, especially when doing fully flooded watches, is the invisible setting

Invisible is exactly how it sounds, you can’t see how the diamonds are secured into the gold. If it sounds complicated, well, that’s because it is.

To do this, drilling and carving the Patek’s metal with impeccable precision is imperative. While this isn’t necessarily difficult for a pro gem-setter, it does require a lot of time and assiduousness.

Everything has to be perfect for the invisible setting, and to keep the integrity of the watch from weakening or losing its water resistance, only the correct amount of metal should be removed…

And with this one, it was. This watch not only has a superlative setting, it is also faultless in its original integrity.

All in all, this process takes a long time. For something like this, you are looking at waiting months for the job to be done. Sometimes it can take as long as 6 months, or more…

If you want a bust down watch, you can’t settle for anything less than perfection. This one we have here is perfection, and we proudly show this one off, even to the purists out there who may resent all the bustdown watches flooding the market.

To our purists friends, reading this with what we guess is a side-eye, we still honor our collectibles. So, we just want to make that clear.

If someone has the money for a bust down and they want something as badass as this white gold Patek Nautilus 5711, we are all for it.

Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711

When the Patek Philippe Nautilus 5711 was released back in 2006, it hit the market hard. The demand far exceeded the supply. To this day, that remains the fact.

Like the Rolex Daytona, prices for the 5711 on the secondhand market are 50% higher than MSRP. It’s one of the most highly sought after watches in the game.

Overall, the 5711 is a more-than-worthy successor to the original 3700. It has a 43mm case, outdoing the original by 1mm. The watch retains the DNA of the Nautilus beautifully. It has the classic shape, with the two prestigious, well-known prominent ears, the iconic bezel, and the illustrious, opulent minimalism. Moreover, it has the same traditional Nautilus hands, but with an added central sweep seconds hand.

Even with this particular Patek 5711 being completely flooded with baguette diamonds, it is instantly identified as a Nautilus.

As for the movement, its beating heart is a Patek Philippe in-house Caliber 315 SC with a centrally mounted oscillating weight. It’s one of the most precise and accurate movements that exist.
