Keira Knightley to Play Coco Chanel
You know her as the period drama actress that also occasionally straps on a pair of pirate boots, so it should come as no surprise that Keira Knightley, the beautiful British starlet and model, will take the helm of the lead role in Karl Lagerfeld’s new short film about the glamorous and fascinating Coco Chanel.
Though there have been many films about Coco Chanel throughout time, including the magnificent version starring French ingénue Audrey Tautou, this latest spin will no doubt feature a greater focus on the styling, clothes and accessories of the brand than of the founder of the fashion house itself. Expect a heavily stylized, soft-focus art piece that sells Keira and perfume in equal measure.
A Stylish Friendship
There’s more to this casting story than meets the eye. Though Miss Knightley is undoubtedly an excellent choice for this period film, she wasn’t merely cast for her noted facility with the costumes of bygone eras. No, she was chosen mainly on account of her close relationship with Mr. Lagerfeld himself.
As the face of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle perfume line, Keira and Karl have had plenty of time to get chummy. Additionally, Monsieur Lagerfeld helped resplendently dress Knightley for role as Anna Karenina in her most recent film.
100 Years of High Drama
As you well know, Lagerfeld leans towards eccentricity, so the film is guaranteed to be wild and weird. It marks the 100th anniversary of the first Chanel boutique in Normandy, France, and there is talk that the Creative Director is sparing no expense to recreate the location with high-end sets.
Friends like Keira Knightley aren’t the only benefactors of Karl Lagerfeld’s vision, it seems his adorable godson Hudson Kroenig will make an appearance as well. Time will tell if his infamous cat Choupette gets some screen time, but the sartorial world sits with breath bated for the release of this fashionable homage starring the illustrious Keira Knightley. It’s set for release in May in Singapore, watch for the subsequent YouTube clips.
