bridal stacks

Stacking wedding bands is a fashion statement that has been around for a long time. As long as people have been wearing jewelry, in fact. However, in recent years, stacking (or layering) rings has become a very popular trend for women, especially those in their 20s and 30s.

Nowadays, brides have a plethora of choices when it comes to engagement, wedding and eternity rings, and stacking these wedding rings is one of the most sought after trends.

With the many options comes a common question, “how should I stack wedding rings, and why?” We are here to give you all the answers…plus, we’ve put together a few different diamond ring stacks from our personal collection at Diamond by Raymond Lee for your eyes to enjoy.

This bridal stack features an engagement ring with raised mounting using a solitaire setting. Stack wedding rings like this and your engagement ring will be the center of attention. It shows off all angles of the main attraction while creating brilliance that can be seen across the room.

What is Ring Stacking?

Ring stacking, also known as layering, is a jewelry trend that combines multiple rings on someone’s finger(s). A wedding ring stack commonly starts with an engagement ring, then a wedding band, and finally an anniversary (eternity) ring.

With that being said, ring stacking doesn’t have to include wedding rings, and it can be a combination of any rings you please. Furthermore, the rings can be matching or not, and so can the stones. It’s a great way to show off your personality.

In any case, to create a ring stack, you just need multiple rings on a single finger.

In this post, however, we will be discussing wedding ring stacks (as seen all of the images).

Pear cuts are extremely hot right now – The straight diamond wedding bands paired with the solitaire setting pear cut engagement rings make for an utterly gorgeous and fashionable look reminiscent of classic eras. This is one of our favorite vintages inspired stacks that we’ve created in 2019.

Why is ‘Stacked Wedding Rings’ a trend?

The trend has been around for quite some time. It’s become even more illustrious recently thanks to Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, who married Prince Harry in 2018.

Many women wear three rings to a stack – one for engagement, one for marriage, and one for eternal love (an eternity ring – usually given as an anniversary gift). The stack allows women to remember special times in their lives on a daily basis. Therefore, it’s not only a fashionable look it’s also meaningful.

A lot of women are self-purchasing ‘stack bands’ to wear with their engagement rings, and couples have opted to buy multiple wedding rings at once, as to create the highly desired appearance of the stack without the wait.

This stack is a timeless classic. The white gold cushion cut halo engagement ring boasts round diamond adornments on a straight band. Paired with a straight diamond wedding band and a round cut diamond wedding band, it offers an in-sync look with the perfect flair of shapes and sizes.

Why Stack Wedding Rings?

A lot of brides want to wear two wedding rings around their engagement ring as it creates symmetry. Additionally, it symbolizes security and being ‘locked in’, with the two bands on either side of the engagement ring.

Furthermore, it produces a lot more sparkle on one’s finger, a look most women adore. The more sparkle, the better!

For women who stack rings as their marriage progresses, receiving special gifts over time, it is a daily reminder of their most cherished moments.

What finger to wear stackable rings?

Wedding rings are most commonly worn on the fourth finger (also known as the ring finger) on the left hand. The reason for rings being worn on this particular finger stems from an ancient belief that there is a vein that runs from the ring finger directly to the heart (this belief has been proven wrong, but the tradition remains).

Henri Daussi ALG196 18k White Gold 1.03ctw Diamond Halo Engagement Ring. Also available in Two Tone 14k Rose Gold and White Gold. Approximately 0.71ct cushion cut diamond. Diamond is F in color and VVS2 in clarity. The band has 0.32ctw of round brilliant diamonds.

Which order do you wear engagement, wedding, and eternity rings?

Using a symmetrical stacking method is, in our opinion, one of the best ways to stack wedding rings. You place the engagement ring in the middle, ‘sealing it in’ with the two bands (or wedding band and eternity ring).

Another option is to put the engagement ring on first, then the two bands after (in front).

There really is no right or wrong way, and more bands can always be added, just as long as you can still bend your finger 😉

Can I stack other rings with my wedding rings?

Again, there are no rules when it comes to stacking rings. It isn’t a science, it is a form of art. So, allow your creativity to have free reign.

You can mix rings that you already own. They can be of different metals (white, yellow, and rose gold) and gemstones (like sapphires or rubies). They can be dainty or chunky bands. It really doesn’t matter. However, we do suggest that you aim to create a cohesive look…although some people live for chaos, and that’s perfectly great.

If you are looking to match your brands, like the pictures in this article, you can buy them together or choose wisely amongst different collections and designer brands.

In any case, don’t be afraid to experiment.

How many rings can I stack together?

This is another thing that is completely up to you. Most ring fingers will comfortably fit three or four rings. However, this really depends on the size and shapes of the rings and how sensitive your fingers and hands are to wearing multiple rings.

At Diamonds by Raymond Lee, we are partial to odd numbers, so we suggest the three-ring stack.

If you don’t like stacking one finger with all of your wedding rings, you can also place your engagement ring on your left hand and your other bands on your right. This is also a very powerful look that many women opt for, at least sometimes.

How to choose and match rings?

You don’t necessarily have to match your rings – Even jewelry traditionalist state that when it comes to wedding stacks, you can mix metals, gems, diamonds, and shapes.

If you prefer the look of the stacks we’ve created, then you should choose the same color metals and gems. This will create an appearance of prestige, and your finger will have a staggering sparkle. We love this style and believe it to be the most classic.

The main thing is, though, that you are happy with your ring stack, as you are the one wearing it.

Gabriel & Co. 14k White Gold 0.29ctw Diamond Thin Band. Approximately 0.29ctw of round brilliant accent diamonds. Diamonds are G/H in color and SI2 in quality and cover about halfway around the band.

Is there an engagement ring style that works best in a stack?

If you prefer a larger, icy look, go for an engagement ring with raised mounting. This way your center stone will sparkle heavily. Furthermore, it will create a more flush appearance for your stack.

Conversely, if you like a more subdued style with lower mounting, go for contoured bands that fit comfortably amongst the engagement ring’s setting.

For a well-composed, diversified look, you can mix and match lower mountings with straight bands. A negative space from one ring to the other can be considered a styling element of its own. This isn’t a bad option as it will completely avoid any wearing of the rings, as they won’t be rubbing together.

Should I buy the rings separately or together?

Brides nowadays prefer to stack rings straight away, so buying the rings all at once makes more sense financially because if you buy rings together you are likely to get a reduced price.

Bridal sets are an excellent option for value on money spent. They incorporate an impeccable matching of engagement ring and wedding band. Some even include multiple wedding bands to provide the three or four ring stack that many brides want. Furthermore, you can always add different bands to your stack in the future.

why stacked wedding rings

This wedding ring stack is flawlessly balanced, with its angular shapes and bands in order from smallest to biggest creating a strikingly powerful look. If you are looking for a stack where the engagement ring is the center of attention, this is a fantastic option, as the large cushion cut diamond engagement ring overpowers the stack and the larger band in the back really completes the overall look.

How should you shop for a stack and where can you buy stackable rings?

Seek to find a store that offers a wide range of stackable rings. It’s always best to visit the store in person so that you can try them on. The experience of trying them on will really let you know if the stack is right for you.

Many people are surprised at how they feel with unexpected pairings when actually trying them on. Having many different options is always the best bet, even if it can feel overwhelming. It is a big purchase so taking the time to make a decision is always a smart move. The jewelry store should never make you feel pressured, and a good one won’t.

Remember, you can always add to your stack over time, so don’t feel obligated to buy them all at once. Again, if you are confident that you will remain satisfied with the purchase, bridal sets are an amazing option as they are made for each other and they will save you money.
