Jewelry Trends from the 2012 Emmys

Jewelry Trends from the 2012 Emmys

Yesterday we gave our rundown of the Best Emmy Jewelry and Sunday we live tweeted the red carpet – both gave us plenty of time to process, dissect and analyze the Emmy Jewelry we saw and pinpoint a few trends. Red Carpet season launches so many of the next year’s trends (both in fashion and jewelry) so when we see a recurring theme, piece, gem, or style, odds are that the celebs are starting a new trend! And Sunday night’s Emmys revealed a slew of new jewelry trends.

Statement Earrings

By far and away the biggest trend of the night, statement earrings stole the show. From massive drops (carved lavender jade and sapphires on Nicole Kidman and Julie Bowen) to bejeweled danglers like Heidi Klum’s, statement earrings ruled the red carpet. In the mid length range, Ginnifer Goodwin and Julianna Margulies stood out, as did host Giulianna Rancic’s Sutra emeralds.

Studs

For every one pair of standout statement earrings, 10 actresses showed up in studs. Inevitably, the Lorraine Schwartz, Neil Lane and Fred Leighton designed diamonds sent a message loud and clear: in the age of Twitter-charged fashion police (guilty as charged), stars play it safe more readily than take a jewelry risk. It backfired though – ladies, step away from the studs and bring on the interesting bling! (Except for you Lucy Liu).

Cabochons

Full disclosure: we went into this awards season giddily anticipating an Art Deco explosion. But in lieu of geometric designs, angular lines, Egyptian homage & other Deco traits, we got an eye full of cabochons! And we are not complaining. We loved Julia Louis-Drefyus’ fabulous Irene Neuwirth 18k Rose and White Gold Earrings set with Lightening Ridge Black Opals and Rose Cut Diamonds. And Jane Krakowski owned the manicam with her breathtaking platinum, diamond, black onyx and emerald ring by Lorraine Schwartz.

Pointer & Middle Finger Rings

Celebrities like Emily VanCamp, Hayden Panetierre, Morena Baccarin and Hannah Simone wore great rings on unexpected fingers. Granted, this may have something to do with the baubles being borrowed (and therefore not perfectly sized for the celebs), but we’re diggin this trend anyways!
