Cameo is a method of carving that features a raised positive relief image contrasting a negative intaglio image. The method is often used to make jewelry with different stones layered together. The most popular stones for this are onyx and agate but other semi-precious gemstones can be used as well. Cameo jewelry dates as far back as the 3rd century BC and first made an appearance in Greece.
