Watch of the Week: The Heuer Autavia
TAG Heuer watches are the perfect blend of simplicity and ruggedness. They’re one of the most versatile Swiss watch brands, ranging from utility watches to elegant dress watches, and beginning at an extremely reasonable price point, running all the way up to the pricier echelons of Swiss luxury.
Vintage Heuer’s (pre-TAG), in particular, possess an extra dose of the self-assured straightforwardness that TAG Heuer signifies. In short: these watches don’t need to jump through hoops to impress – the class and performance are taken at face value. Take the Heuer Autavia, for instance. Originally created as a dashboard clock for cars & planes (AUTo + aVIAtion), it made the leap from dash to wrist in the 60’s, and remains a favorite collectible.
The Heuer Autavia’s black tachymeter bezel and black dial cloak it in sleek sophistication. Chunky hands with bold points give it a distinct vintage feel (appropriate, ‘cus it’s vintage) while the digital clock-esque numbers on the chronographs enhance the period feel. Simple luminescent markers ensure easy legibility and an unfussy way to round out the dial.
The Autavia’s distinctly cylindrical pushers hold down the case’s right side, while the crown covers the left, for a nicely symmetrical look.
The TAG Heuer Autavia has more than 30 variations (even preceding the 2003 reissue), so the myriad bracelet and strap options offer even further customization. This Autavia’s bracelet isn’t actually factory, making it especially unique. A tight basket weave core surrounded by more traditional links creates an interesting visual effect that still lets the vintage case shine.
The TAG Autavia is the perfect watch for a no-nonsense guy, who appreciates the finer things and calls a classic like he sees it.
