The World's Most Expensive Pen: By Van Cleef & Arpels, Montblanc
Do you know someone who loves the best of everything, lots of bling and writes incessantly (present company excluded?) If you do, then this unique luxury pen would be the best gift you could ever present to them. The limited-edition pen named Mystery Masterpiece created in cooperation by luxury stationery companies Montblanc and Van Cleef & Arpels is a one-of-a-kind collectible that will find a place among your collectible hall of fame. The pen will look at home right next to your First Edition signed copy of The Raven and other literary gems. After all, this dazzling pen is truly a unique luxury item, a high-fashion writable, if you will. It is available in three color options–emeralds, sapphires and rubies. Note here, that these are not just color names, but actual gemstones that adorn this haute couture writing instrument. This luxury gift at the very least ought to count for multiple brownie points from the recipient for a few weeks.
In addition to being decorated with these lovely gemstones, each pen has approximately 840 individual diamonds embedded into the exterior in intricate swirling patterns. The cost of this unusual pen is $730,000, and it was designed to commemorate the centennial of two of the most well-known stationary brands–Montblanc and Van Cleef & Arpels. The two companies worked together on the fine-quality limited-edition Mystery Masterpiece pen to create both the concept and the design as a worthy symbol of their longevity in business. All three versions of the pen, emeralds, sapphires and rubies, use the Mystery Setting™ method developed by Van Cleef & Arpels for setting the gemstones. These incredible pens are absolutely stunning with their extravagantly intricate patterns, and extravagant price tags. They are a true tribute to one hundred years of the two brands’ history.
Montblanc has been a part of the luxury-brand market for generations, a celebrated manufacturer of writing instruments. Named after the highest summit in the Alps, Montblanc supports the conviction of preservation and opulence. Sold in jewelry stores and boutiques around the world, the name Montblanc represents luxury and prominence.
For over 100 years, Van Cleef & Arpels has been combining the ultimate in craftsmanship, technical prowess and innovation in its creations. Mystery Setting™ is a unique method associated with Van Cleef & Arpels since the Maison patented this invention in 1933. The technique consists of setting gemstones in such a way that no prongs are visible. The high level of expertise required for the technique makes Mystery Setting™ the exclusive purview of a small number of master jewelers.
The technique is so intricate such that creating a single brooch takes at minimum at least 300 hours work to complete. Each faceted gemstone is carefully inserted onto thin gold posts less than 2/10 of a millimeter in thickness. Once the setting is completed, the gemstones appear to be wholly free-standing. Because of the difficulty of the stone-setting process, Mystery Set jewelry pieces are extremely rare; the Maison produces no more than a few of them each year.
