Brooke Astor Auction Prices Blow Estimates Away
The much anticipated Brooke Astor auction at Sotheby’s concluded on Tuesday with our personal favorite lots – the jewelry!
The entire auction saw realizations that sometimes tripled the estimate (the most expensive lot, a 19th century painting by John Frederick Lewis, sold for over $1.5 million – it was estimated between $300k -$500k).
The Grande Dame of New York society continued her generous philanthropic contributions posthumously, this auction raising an enormous amount of money for the designated non-profits. Altogether? The auction realized $18.8 million.
And while the highest realized prices belonged to several of Brooke Astor’s antiques and art, it’s no surprise that some of her most fabulous jewels garnered a significant portion of that near $19 million. Namely:
