Baby, You're a Star Sapphire
A star sapphire is precisely what its stellar name suggests – a sapphire that feature a star design. That star shape is actually an inclusion, an internal characteristic created by the gem’s specific crystal structure & minerals within. We’ve talked about inclusions before when discussing diamond clarity, but all gemstones can feature inclusions. We liken them to a birthmark or a fingerprint – unique to each individual gem. Star sapphires’ inclusions happen to be long, needle-like crystals shaped into a 6 ray star as a result of the mineral rutile inside the sapphire. The best way to cut a star sapphire (or ruby) is into a cabochon with the star centered on the dome. Added to platinum with a dash of diamonds, the star sapphire has a breathtaking effect.
