Hublot isn’t like Rolex or Patek Philippe in that it wasn’t founded over a century ago. In fact, Hublot is relatively recent, but its success has proven that it is not contingent on time.
In 1976 Carlo Crocco left the company he was working for to create a new watch company. He moved to Geneva and started designing a watch that he named Hublot, meaning porthole in French. For those unfamiliar with the word, porthole is a circular window on the hull of ships to receive light and air. The Hublot watch that Crocco created featured the first ever-natural rubber strap in the history of watchmaking. It took about three years to create such a strap. On the first day of its release at the 1980 Basel Watch Fair, the watch did not attract a single customer. However, over the next year the Hublot watch attracted enough customers to earn the company $2 million.
Over the next couple of years, Crocco became very involved with the Hand-in-Hand Foundation, a charity set on helping poor children over the globe. As a result, he began looking for an owner who could oversee the Hublot business. In 2004, Jean-Claude Biver took over that role as CEO. Biver quickly became involved in the company and in 2005 the Hublot “Big Bang” chronograph was unveiled. The watch was hugely successful and was even awarded the 2005 Design Prize. It received additional awards from around the world. By 2006, Hublot sales were reaching numbers as high as 100 million Swiss francs as a result of Biver.
Currently Hublot operates more than 50 stores globally in places like Atlanta, Boca Raton, Las Vegas, New York City, Palm Beach, and even Mongolia.
To increase the brand’s publicity, Hublot has engaged in a variety of sponsorship deals. For 4 million a year, Hublot has a sponsorship with Manchester United. Big Bang watches were also given to referees in the UEFA Euro 2008. In 2010, the brand was appointed as the official watchmaker of Formula 1. As a result, a variety of Formula 1-themed watches have been released by Hublot to commemorate this partnership. For the 2014 FIFA World Cup, Hublot will be the official timekeeper.
Hublot holds a variety of other sponsorships. The brand ambassador for Hublot is Jet Li, the martial artist, director, and actor. Former brand ambassadors include Diego Maradona, Usain Bolt, and a Formula 1 driver.
Formula 1 CEO, Bernie Eccelestone, was once mugged by a group of men and had his Hublot watch stolen. He worked with Hublot to use his face as part of an ad campaign that read “see what people will do for a Hublot.”
