What to bring for a gold evaluation

Gold rings, chains, bracelets, earrings and unwanted or broken gold jewelry are a starting point for discussing what you want to sell. Contact us if you are unsure whether your particular item is suitable.

Bring the gold pieces you want reviewed, including broken chains or single earrings. Keep any available receipts or documentation with them. You do not need to polish or repair your jewelry first. If you have coins or another type of gold item, call ahead to discuss it.

How your gold offer is evaluated

Gold weight, purity and the current gold market are central to the evaluation. Karat markings are useful starting points, but an item's metal needs to be assessed. Stones and non-gold components are not valued as gold weight. Designer or diamond jewelry may also have resale value beyond the metal itself.

Prepare your gold for an in-person review

  1. Group your items. Keep chains, rings, earrings and broken pieces together with any receipts. Separate pieces you want to keep.
  2. Leave stones and settings intact. A complete jewelry item may have value beyond its gold. See our jewelry selling service in Boca Raton for designer, estate and gemstone pieces.
  3. Ask for the basis of the offer. Discuss the assessed purity, net metal weight, treatment of stones and final amount payable before deciding.

Why a spot-price calculation is not a purchase offer

A market gold quotation concerns pure gold. Jewelry can include alloys, stones, clasps and other components, and buyers may account for testing, processing and resale costs. Use a metal-content calculation as a reference, then compare actual offers for the same items and ask about any deductions. For coins or bullion, call first to confirm the appropriate evaluation.

Before your evaluation

Ask about the proposed transaction terms and payment arrangements before accepting an offer. If you need help choosing the right appointment, call the store.

Questions about selling gold

Can broken gold jewelry still have value?

Broken jewelry can retain value in its gold content. Bring it for evaluation before paying for repairs.

Does the karat marking determine the whole offer?

Purity is one factor. Weight, the gold market and the item's other characteristics also matter, and markings need to be checked.

Should designer jewelry be valued only as scrap gold?

A designer piece or diamond setting may have resale value beyond its metal. Ask for the complete item to be considered before deciding how to sell it.

Understanding gold weight and purity

Karat describes the proportion of gold in an alloy: 10K is approximately 41.7% gold, 14K is approximately 58.3%, and 18K is 75%. For illustration, 10 grams of 14K gold alloy contains approximately 5.83 grams of pure gold before accounting for stones or non-gold components. This is a metal-content example, not a purchase quote.

When comparing offers, ask which weight and purity were used, how non-gold parts were treated, and whether the complete piece has value beyond its metal. Compare the final amount you would receive, including any applicable deductions, rather than an advertised percentage alone.
