Spotlight on: Georg Jensen
Although he died nearly 80 years ago, Georg Jensen continues to set the gold standard for silversmithing today. Jensen’s eponymous Danish luxury brand began as a small workshop and expanded into an internationally known brand celebrated all over the world for its unique amalgam of extraordinary craftsmanship and innovative artistry. The sculptural lines, clean design, and breathtaking simplicity of Jensen’s legendary work make it as current today as it was over a century ago.
A Legacy is Born
Georg Jensen knew from a young age that his future was in sculpture, but he did not open his Copenhagen silversmithy until 1904 at the age of 36. Despite his late start, it was just a matter of time before Jensen’s unique Art Nouveau designs caught on with the public; in fact, before the end of the Jazz Age, Jensen had outposts in all of the major metropolitan fashion hubs, including New York, Paris, Stockholm, London and Berlin. Jensen is recognized for his visionary leadership in successfully marketing modern silverware; he is also acknowledged as an early innovator for his work in crafting steel into functional cutlery. One of Denmark’s most famous brands, there are now over 100 Georg Jensen stores in over 10 countries, selling gold, silver, platinum and diamond jewelry, as well as fashion accessories and design items for the home.
From the Jensen House to Your Home
Georg Jensen continues to offer innovative Danish design for the 21st century while adapting and evolving to fit contemporary demands. The company recently launched its Home Concept line, which combines traditional Georg Jensen handcrafted sterling silver products with items engineered from new mediums, such as leather, stainless steel, copper, brass and glass. With a wider-than-ever platform from which to deliver the brand’s innovative line to its waiting audience, Georg Jensen remains well-positioned to continue its reign as Denmark’s leading leading luxury lifestyle brand.
