Sotheby’s “Magnificent Jewels” Auction for Breast Cancer Includes Estee Lauder Jewelry
December 5, 2012 Sotheby’s will auction off jewels that once belonged to Estee Lauder and her daughter- in- law Evelyn Lauder to benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation in a stellar event titled “Magnificent Jewels.” The women’s jewels will continue with a cause first brought to fruition by Evelyn Lauder in 1993, when she created a campaign of awareness that had grown to span the globe and has garnered more than 35 million dollars aimed at ongoing education and research for breast cancer.
Both women were known for their dedication to the well known skin care and beauty product line, but perhaps they were even more famous for their multiple humanitarian efforts. Some of the honors they have earned included France’s Legion of Honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and the American Society of Clinical Oncology’s Partners in Progress Award. Evelyn also had a hand in the creation of the now familiar pink ribbon that symbolizes a solidarity and support for women with breast cancer.
Leonard Lauder, son of the late Estee and husband of the late Evelyn has issued a statement extolling the singular quality of each of the 35 donated pieces. The collection is associated with renowned names in the jewelry industry, including Harry Winston, Van Cleef & Arpel’s, and Oscar Heyman and features a variety of stunning treasures. Among them is 6.5- carat pink diamond ring that belonged to Evelyn, valued at four to five million dollars, and a 47- carat yellow diamond pendant of Estee’s that once belonged to the duchess of Windsor, valued at one and a half to two million dollars. Lauder said he knew that his late mother and wife would be pleased with the worthy use of their jewelry collections.
Sotheby’s, along with Leonard Lauder, will carry on in the noble tradition established by two exceptional women in the battle against breast cancer with a historical and generous gesture.
