Selling Inherited Estate Jewelry in Boca Raton: What to Keep, Bring and Compare
Planning to sell jewelry locally? Our Boca Raton jewelry selling service explains what to bring and how to arrange an in-person evaluation at Raymond Lee Jewelers.
Separate personal decisions from the evaluation
Inherited jewelry can carry memories that a purchase offer cannot measure. Start by setting aside pieces you want to keep. Keep matching earrings, necklace components and sets together, along with receipts, appraisals and any information about the previous owner or maker.
Estate jewelry means previously owned jewelry; it does not necessarily mean antique. Age alone does not determine resale value.

Do not identify jewelry by appearance alone
A large gemstone is not automatically imitation. A missing stamp does not prove a piece is costume jewelry, and a magnet test alone cannot authenticate precious metal. Keep uncertain pieces for assessment instead of discarding them based on a home test.
Photograph your collection for your own records. Avoid publishing serial numbers or personal documents, and leave gemstones in their settings.

Consider the complete piece
Materials, gemstone characteristics, maker, workmanship, condition and resale demand can all matter. A signed designer piece may be considered differently from unbranded jewelry with similar metal content. Ask whether the buyer is evaluating the complete piece or primarily its precious metal.
For broken or unbranded gold pieces, our gold selling guide explains purity and weight. For a loose diamond or engagement ring, review our diamond evaluation service.

An appraisal and a purchase offer serve different purposes
An insurance appraisal generally addresses replacement value. A purchase offer reflects the particular item and its resale market. Keep any existing appraisal with the piece, but do not assume its value is the amount a buyer will pay.
Before paying for a new appraisal or restoration solely to sell an item, ask what information the prospective buyer needs.

Compare your selling options
An outright purchase, consignment and auction can involve different fees, timelines and payment conditions. Ask for those terms before deciding. No type of buyer automatically pays the most for every piece.
Compare offers on the same group of items. Confirm which pieces are included, any deductions, and the final payment arrangements. You can take time to decide which pieces fit your plans.
