The pink diamond fetched $17.4 million at auction in Hong Kong this week, more than double its estimated going price. The Martian Pink went up for auction for the fist time in 36 years, and drew so much attention for its status as the largest pink diamond ever to go to auction. The diamond, a round brilliant fancy intense pink, weighs in at 12.04 carats. The diamond, set in a ring, was created & sold by Harry Winston in 1976. The incredible diamond wrapped up its worldwide tour with a bidding frenzy this week. The intense bidding war took less than 10 minutes to raise the $17.4 million, and was a highlight of Christie’s Magnificent Jewels auction. The entire auction raised over $80 million, and as per usual, broke a world record. This auction’s record breaker was a Burmese ruby weighing 6.04 carats; it sold for $551,000 per carat, a new per carat price record.
