Audemars Piguet Michael Schumacher Partnership
Fine automobiles and fine watches have gone together for decades. Well, now the greatest Formula 1 driver of all time has launched his first collaboration watch. Seven time world champion Michael Schumacher has made official his relationship with Swiss watchmaker Audemars Piguet recently by introducing the special edition Royal Oak Offshore Chronograph. It apparently wasn’t easy however. Audemars Piguet had announced the relationship two years ago.
The watch subtly includes some elements of the race car driver’s long career, which saw him winning more races than any other driver in the sport. Apparently Michael was more than even hands-on in the development of the watch, he reportedly immersed himself in the project. Design elements include a watch face that has the unmistakable look of a race car’s gauges. The watch crystal is surrounded by 8 equally spaced small bolt-look fasteners, that highlight the speedy way in which tires are removed and replaced on Formula One cars. Schumacher worked with Audemars Piguet’s Chief Artistic Officer, Octavio Garcia on the project. Schumacher introduced the watch recently in Berlin.
While the Royal Oak Offshore’s recognizable shape is kept, materials of the case and details of the Michael Schumacher limited edition timepiece are made specifically for this watch. The octagonal bezel is one piece, made from Cermet, which is seven times more durable than steel. This is a signature touch for AP watches. The specially designed rubber strap is attached by microblasted, satin-brushed titanium studs. The three limited edition Royal Oak Offshore watches are available in titanium, 18k rose gold, or platinum cases.
Formula 1 drivers like Schumacher are in high demand from premier watchmakers. Many of the driver’s themselves collect these luxury brand timepieces. Prior to Audemars Piguet, Schumacher was Omega Watches brand ambassador. For Michael Schumacher, it is certainly a step up.
