Thracian Gold Discovered in Bulgaria

Bulgaria, already a hotbed for artifacts and fascinating historical treasures, has once again provided valuable insight for the modern world about past civilizations. Recently, a variety of gold treasures were discovered near Thracian tombs in the northern portion of the country.

Who were the Thracians?

The Thracians were a people who once ruled throughout Bulgaria as well as Macedonia, Greece, Turkey, and Romania. They lived between 4,000 B.C. and the 7^th century A.D. Most of what is known about their culture has been found in the tombs in Bulgaria over the years. They are believed to have been a warrior aristocracy who managed to obtain most of their gold from deposits found at the mouth of the Danube River. They had trading partners in the Scythians, who lived north of them, and the Greeks, who lived to the south.

What was discovered?

The team of archeologists has found a wide range of gold items. Among the treasure were trappings for horses, four bracelets, gold rings, gold buttons, and a tiara that was decorated with images related to animals. The treasure is estimated to be from the late fourth and early third centuries B.C. It is believed to have belonged to the Getae tribe, who were frequently associated with the ancient Greeks.

What does the discovery mean?

The discovery shows that the area may have been a major burial place, possibly even linked to the Getic ruler Cothelas, who lived at the time. The discovery leads some of the archeologists on the team to believe that it is possible more tombs, perhaps even one belonging to the Gath ruler Kotela, who was a father in law to Alexander the Great.
