Van Cleef & Arpels was founded in 1896 in France by Alfred and Salomon Arpels. Alfred was the son-in-law of Salomon. Around the begininning of the 1900s, Arpel passed away. In 1906, Alfred and his brothers-in-law, Salomon and Julien, acquired a space for the company at 22 Place Vendome. This is where the first boutique shop was opened. This helped boost Van Cleef & Arpels business because Place Vendrome was a place where rich Russian, European, and American aristocrats liked to shop. It was a symbol of luxury and elegance. Shortly after, the third brother, Louis, joined the company.
