History of David Yurman

As you may have already noticed, David Yurman bangles adorn the wrists of many women around the country. Without a doubt, Yurman jewelry is simple but yet beautiful. David Yurman is an American designer jewelry company that was founded by David Yurman in 1980 in New York City. In total, there are 22 Yurman stores around the globe – 18 in the United States and 4 internationally. The first international store was opened in the glamorous city of Hong Kong. The company has sales close to $700 million per year.

One man with a vision founded the company not long ago. As a result, the history of the actual company isn’t as complex as the man who founded it. David Yurman grew up on Long Island, New York. In high school, he made little sculptures that he sold to students and others. At only age sixteen, he was introduced to Ernesto Gonzales and shortly after to Theodore Roszak and Jacques Lipchitz. They saw the passion and talent within the young boy and decided to take him under their wings. Yurman enrolled at New York University but within a year, he dropped out and travelled the country until he reached California. After some time, he returned to Greenwich Village where Hans Van de Bovenkamp took him under his apprenticeship. With the help of Bovenkemp, Yurman met the painter Sybil Kleinrock.

Yurman’s work was recognized when Sybil was actually wearing one of Yurman’s pieces to an art opening. The jewelry piece caught the eye of a gallery owner who wanted to purchase it. This reaffirmed Sybil’s trust in Yurman and as a result both of them founded Putnam Art Works. Over the next decade, the two created numerous forms of art and fell in love. In 1979 they married and in 1980 David Yurman, the company, was founded. Yurman’s iconic cable bracelet was one of his most popular productions. Today the company produces a variety of jewelry, fragrances, and watches.

The signature cable bracelet was produced by Yurman in 1982. Its design included a helix adorned with gemstones on the ends of the bracelet. Other famous collections include Silver Ice, the Buckle collection, and the X collection. In 2008, Sybil and Yurman launched their fragrance collection with the help of perfumers who helped to develop CK One and Ralph Lauren Romance. In 2009, the Classic Collection of watches was launched with the help of David’s son, Evan Yurman. The watches under this collection incorporate the signature cable design.
