Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean goodplanet Review

This is a hands-on, in-depth review of the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GoodPlanet GMT 600m Co-Axial Chronograph 45.5mm watch.

omega seamaster planet ocean review

Back in 2013, Omega released their Seamaster Planet Ocean GoodPlanet GMT Chronograph Co-axial 600m watch. Since then, it has become a major player in the Seamaster Planet Ocean collection.

This watch was made in collaboration with the Good Planet Foundation environmentalist initiative. The Seamaster Planet Ocean GoodPlanet was also launched in tandem with the movie “Planet Ocean”, which was released in 2012.

We love how the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m GoodPlant is a combination of an innovative timepiece and goodhearted commitment to the environment. They even go as far as to give a portion of this watch’s proceeds to completely fund a project to preserve mangroves, seagrasses and coral reefs in the oceans of South Asia.

So, there is a lot of meaning behind the creation of this watch, making it particularly interesting for watch collectors.

This Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Goodplanet GMT comes equipped with a lot of interesting and useful features, all of which we will dive into in this review. And we are going to go deep, like 600m deep.

Here is our in-depth, hands-on review of the Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GoodPlanet GMT 600m.

History of the Omega Seamaster Collection

Let’s begin with the history of Omega’s Seamaster models, as the history is long and interesting and there have been plenty of variations over time.

The first Seamaster model came out in 1948. The first model was a dressy watch. It wasn’t until 1957 when the Seamaster received the look of what we now consider a “dive watch”.

This first true dive watch was the Seamaster 300 reference 2913. It was the first of the “Professional” line. It had a round stainless steel case with a rotating bezel and it could withstand water pressure at great depths. 660 feet to be exact. The Seamaster 300 2913 is now a highly coveted and collectible model.

Although the Seamaster 300 was the first of the “Professional” series, it wasn’t until 1988, when they released the Seamaster 200m, that they started printing the word “Professional” on the dial.

Many people know of the Seamaster thanks to James Bond, as he was featured wearing the Seamaster 200m in the movies. It later became unofficially coined the “James Bond” version. Moreover, this gave this series a major boost in popularity.

Years later, Omega introduced the Seamaster Professional 300m GMT.

The design of the 2005 Seamaster Planet Ocean resembles that of the 1957 version, which many vintage watch enthusiasts greatly appreciate.

Fast forward to 2013, and we have the Seamaster Planet Ocean 600M GMT Co-axial Chronograph, one of our favorite Seamaster watches of them all.

This watch is so powerful that it rivals that of the Rolex Sea-Dweller Deepsea and Role GMT-GMT Master II.

Now, let’s find out just how much it competes with Rolex by looking at the watch’s features from all angles.

Omega Good Planet DIAL & HANDS

The Seamaster Planet Ocean 600m GMT watch has 9 variations. Five have a black dial and four have a navy blue dial. If you see a blue dial, then you know it’s either their titanium version or the GoodPlanet, which underlies the partnership between Omega and the GoodPlanet Foundation. And the one we are looking at today is just that. The Blue dial GoodPlanet version.

The GoodPlanet watch is the only version with orange numerals on the rotating bezel and an orange 24h GMT hand.

The dial pulls a lot of inspiration from the Planet Ocean series as a whole, and it even features design elements captured from the first “Professional” Seamaster.

Each hour marker is polished, faceted, and rhodium plated. In between each of the hour markers rests the minute railtrack, which serve as minute markers. Then there is the date window at the 3 o’clock.

On the top of the dial, the words Seamaster and ‘GMT’ are printed in white and orange, respectively. And just above the six reads CO-AXIAL, CHRONOMETER and 660M/2000ft, all of which is in grayish-white lettering.

The whole dial is smothered in SuperLumiNova, so legibility in the dark is literally just as good as it is in the light. The white Super-LumiNova emits blue light everywhere, except on the minute hand and dot on the 24-hour bezel, where it emits a green light. Lastly, the orange GMT hand is formed from anodized aluminum.

All in all, the dial has everything you could ask for – good looks and smart complications.

OMEGA Co-Axial Calibre 8605 MOVEMENT

The Seamaster PO GMT has an ever-desirable self-winding movement that comes with Omega’s 3-level Co-Axial escapement and Si14 silicon balance spring. The two mainspring barrels are set in order and when fully wound they offer 60 hours of power reserve.

Furthermore, it has a rhodium plated balance bridge and oscillating mass, and the finish is the illustrious Geneva waves in arabesque.

GoodPlanet Complications

In terms of complications, there are three main complications, all of which are equally impressive and high quality.

  • 24-hour GMT
  • Chronometer
  • Helium Escape Valve
The GMT complication is that of a travelers GMT rather than an office GMT.

What’s the difference you ask?

Well, a traveler’s GMT has an hour hand that is independently adjustable. So you can easily adjust the local time (hour, minute and second hands) without affecting the GMT hand. All you have to do is unscrew the crown, pull it into the first position, then you can adjust the hour hand by one-hour increments. When doing so, the 24-hour hand will remain on your current home-time (or whatever you have it set to). The date will always indicate the local time.

With office GMT watches, the 24-hour GMT hand is independently adjustable.

The issue with office GMT watches is if you are traveling with it to new time zones, it isn’t as convenient. This is because you will need to change the time to your new local time AND you need to change the 24-hour hand too, as it won’t automatically remain in your home time. Essentially, it is just a few more steps to get the job done when your local time is changing rather than the second time zone.

A travelers GMT is recommended for those who actually travel, whereby the GMT is most useful anyway. However, if you are tracking different time zones, say for work, but you aren’t actually changing your local time zone, then an office GMT makes sense.

As for the Chronometer and Helium Escape Valve, both are incredibly functional.

A Chronometer complication needs no introduction, but we can say confidently this is one of the best we’ve seen. It’s been functioning flawlessly since day one.

For those who don’t know the function of a Helium Escape Valve, in a nutshell, it allows helium to be released upon decompression after a deepsea dive. When you dive to great depths, not only does helium build up in your blood, but it also builds up in watches, so with the helium escape valve, you can release it safely instead of risking the helium pressure popping your crystal off, which was a common occurrence before the creation of the helium escape valve.

Planet Ocean GMT 45.5mm CASE

One of the most fascinating things about this Planet Ocean GoodPlanet GMT is its size. Omega used an entirely new case rather than using an existing case from previous Planet Ocean models. All PO GMT use a new mid-size case. However, the Planet Ocean GoodPlanet GMT Chronograph featured here uses a 45.5mm wide case, which is in fact quite large. You can see this in our pictures, as the watch fits with a substantial demeanor.

The height is also impressive, reaching 17.25mm high. This is due in part to the need for 600 meters of water resistance with a helium escape valve complication.

The stainless steel case is a charming mixture of polished and straight brushed finishing. What’s more, is the dome sapphire crystal is completely scratch-resistant and anti-reflective on both sides. Both of which we can conclude work perfectly. Most of the time when looking at the dial, you won’t even notice the crystal is there.

In regards to weight, this stainless steel version is pretty heavy. So, if you are into lightweight watches, the titanium blue dial might be the better option for you, although you won’t get the satisfaction of the GoodPlanet initiative. We personally appreciate the weight, as it gives us the feeling of wearing a watch with quality materials.

The screw down crown and the helium escape valve are knurled, ensuring that you can get a really great grip on it, which is super important during dives. Moreover, the crown is slightly embedded using asymmetry to the right side of the case, which gives it some extra protection.

GoodPlanet Blue & Orange BEZEL

The bezel is a bi-directional rotating bezel with a 24-hour scale. Of course, as this is a GMT, it doesn’t just indicate a 24 hour scale, it serves its purpose as a third-time zone indicator as well. Three times zones all in one on a deepsea dive watch? YES, PLEASE! It’s really such a fantastically functional watch.

Lastly, to touch on the colors, the bezel’s blue ceramic with bright orange lacquer GMT scale numerals matches the rest of the watch impeccably well. It’s very aesthetic.

Omega Good Planet Blue RUBBER STRAP

Our Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean GoodPlanet GMT 600m comes with its original blue rubber strap, which is superbly comfortable.

Furthermore, it balances the weight of the case beautifully.

You will definitely get compliments on just the strap alone as the texture and seamlessly smooth design looks so fantastic with the steel case and blue dial and bezel. It has white stitching on both of the edges to further compliment the design, and the single folding deployant clasp with its release button makes for an easy off and on.

We personally think the blue rubber strap is a much better look than a steel bracelet or leather strap. It just really compliments the watch’s overall design.

Omega Seamaster PO GMT Blue Watch ON THE WRIST

On the wrist, this watch is ready for all sorts of activities, especially diving! That should go without saying at this point of the review, though.

The Omega Seamaster PO GoodPlanet GMT is an all-around watch, so you can wear it on casual occasions and formal occasions alike.

However, due to its robust size, it can be tricky to wear with a dress cuff, and it is best avoided with a black suit or tuxedo, simply as it doesn’t match. Beyond that, this watch goes with pretty much everything. It’s super versatile and will spice up any outfit.

Plus, if you are brave enough to buy a blue and orange watch, you should be brave enough to wear its sporty appearance with pride on those dressy nights out. Your watch will stand out, and when it’s this impressive, who wouldn’t want that.

It’s sporty, big, modern, functional, stylish and it has all the sophistication you could ask for. To top it all off, it’s one of the most comfortable watches we’ve come across. These are all important characteristics of a luxury watch, and appreciatively, the Seamaster Planet Ocean GoodPlanet is chock full of each one.

We can guarantee you will get a lot of positive feedback with this one.
