Maybe you are buying a ring for your girlfriend or wife and you are worried about getting the wrong ring size is.

In any case, there’s good news, you can resize a ring up or down.

However, there are some caveats, as some rings can’t be resized. Thankfully, though, there are alternative methods.

In this article, we will cover everything you need to know about ring resizing, from A-Z.

Before you decide if the ring in question needs resizing, here is an important question to know the answer to.

How should a ring fit?

A ring should be able to slide on somewhat easily, and off with slight resistance.

A sign that your ring is too small is if your finger bulges around the ring. This will irritate your finger and it’ll be uncomfortable to wear.

Conversely, your ring shouldn’t slide without restriction when wearing it. If it does, it could fall off and you could potentially lose it.

Now, it may seem like a simple science, it either fits or it doesn’t. Yet, your finger size can fluctuate daily due to things like temperature…yes, your finger does expand and shrink with the weather. Although it doesn’t change that much, it’s still enough to affect how your ring fits.

Luckily, ring resizing can easily be done, and if not, alternative methods exist (sometimes a temporary solution is best). So, don’t fret, you can achieve the right fit!

How to resize a ring

If you’ve come to the conclusion that your ring definitely needs resizing up or down, here is the process that your ring will need to go through.

Ring Resizing Smaller

So, your ring is too big and you need to make it smaller. To do this, a jeweler will cut off a small piece of the shank or band and then rejoin the ends by soldering them together. Once the ring is soldered, it should be cleaned and polished to abolish antioxidants. Antioxidants occur during the soldering process, and when smoothing the surface.

Note: There are some rings that you won’t be able to resize smaller, which we will get into further below.

Ring Resizing Bigger

The process for making your band larger is similar. A jeweler will cut the band and add additional metal to it using a skillful soldering technique. The same precious metal must be used. Once the soldering is complete, the ring’s circular shape will be restored, and it will need a cleaning and polishing to make it look like new again.

Another option involves stretching the band, but this is something we don’t recommend unless you are resizing by just half a size, as it will thin out the band’s metal, and it could possibly warp the ring’s shape.

It all really depends on the type of ring and how well the resizing is done. Some rings can be resized as many times as needed, such as thick, heavy and durable rings. But if your ring is thin and lightweight, you should be careful.

No matter what, you should always ask a professional jeweler for their advice. They will tell you what to do with your particular ring.

This isn’t such a cut and dry answer as it depends on factors such as detailing, the thickness of the band, the metal, gemstones, setting, and where you live.

In general, rings made from the following metals can be resized without concern and the costs are not very high. The price for resizing will ultimately depend on the materials used and the amount of labor to get the job done.

White Gold & Cost Of Resizing

White gold is fairly easy to work with. Rings made of white gold have rhodium plating which comes off when melted, therefore the ring will need to be re-plated with rhodium once again.

For resizing down, it’ll probably cost you around $30-60, as that is the cost for rhodium plating.

If you resizing up, taking into account the cost of rhodium AND white gold, you are looking at around $60-$130.

Yellow Gold & Cost of Resizing 

Yellow gold is soft so it is easy to work with. Also, unlike white gold, you just need to cut and solder, no additional materials or plating are required. Thus, it is less costly to resize yellow gold rings. To get the average cost, you can calculate the price of yellow gold at the current time. Make sure you consider karats when calculating. As of 2019, you are looking at around $50-100 for a typical yellow gold engagement ring resizing.

Platinum & Cost of Resizing

Rings made of platinum will be the toughest to work with, but still very doable. Platinum rings require additional time, special tools, and burning gas.

With that, comes a higher cost. Simple platinum rings will cost around $100 to resize and more complex ones will be around $300+. You can cut the costs in half for resizing down.

Sterling Silver rings will be the least expensive, and they are easy to work with. Typically, it’ll cost around $20-50 for resizing a silver ring.

Note: Resizing up will cost more, as you are adding material. Many times resizing down will be done for free. Furthermore, the thicker the metal, the more it will cost for resizing up. To calculate costs, you can take into consideration the current price for the material you are adding to the band. 

Difficult rings to resize

The following rings are difficult to resize. They will require a highly skillful jeweler.

Pave and channel set rings

Many of these kinds of settings have small stones going all the way around the ring. The only way you can resize this kind of ring is if there is an area of plain metal at the bottom where no diamonds or gems are set. It’s likely you will only be able to resize them to a limited degree because of this. Resizing up is a bit easier for pave or channel set rings, but make sure your jeweler is skilled so the stones don’t become misaligned.

Rose gold rings 

Rose gold rings are difficult for a couple reasons.

Firstly, they come in many different tones, some being redder and others more gold color, so it is hard for a jeweler to get the exact match in terms of color. Your best bet is to go to the jeweler who you bought the ring from for resizing.

Secondly, rose gold is very delicate, which means it can crack fairly easy during resizing. Skilled jewelers can avoid this, but this is something that should be of concern when considering a ring resizing.

Note: Rings with engravings will likely lose the engraving, as that is likely the area they will need to cut and solder. So if you want to keep the markings, you either shouldn’t resize or you’ll need to re-engrave it once it is resized.

What kind of rings can’t be resized?

Unfortunately, some kinds of rings can’t be resized. The following rings are either very difficult to resize or can’t be resized at all, so make sure you understand this before purchasing.

Stainless Steel & Titanium Rings

Rings made from these materials cannot be resized, as they are far too hard to work with. Many men’s wedding bands are made from titanium or stainless steel, so be sure that you have the correct size when purchasing.

Eternity Bands

Eternity bands are super popular gifts for milestones in marriages or relationships, especially nowadays with the ring stack trend going full force. They are rings fully encircled with small pavé stones. Because of this, they are nearly impossible to resize. If you do try to have it resized, the ring will most have a misalignment of the originally, perfectly continuous stones.

Tension rings 

As the name suggests, tension rings hold diamonds in place with the perfect amount of pressure, rather than a prong setting. Therefore, resizing it will negatively affect the structural strength of the ring.

How long does it take to resize a ring?

The process for resizing isn’t very time consuming, in fact. It’s can actually take as little as 15 minutes. However, it really depends on the ring size, material, setting of the stones, etc.  Every ring resizing should be done with extreme care and should undergo a polishing and cleaning afterward to give it that brand new look.

Now the actual process is different than the jeweler’s turnaround time, as they might not have the time to do it right way. If you want same-day ring resizing, you need to contact the jeweler in advance to see if they can accommodate that.

Most jewelers will do a 1-2 business day turnaround. That’s what we provide at Raymond Lee Jewelers, however, if you contact us in advance, we can most likely plan a day for you to bring it in and do a same-day ring resizing.

Resizing a ring without cutting

As mentioned, some types of rings can’t be resized. However, sometimes it’s not the best idea to resize a ring, even if it can be resized.

Resizing a ring is permanent, and a temporary solution will make more sense in certain circumstances.

For example, some people are very sensitive to weather changes, and if it is cold, their rings will fit too large and spin on their finger. In this case, it might make sense to do a temporary solution for the winter.

Another example would be when a ring is just slightly too big because you lost some weight. It’s possible that you will gain some weight back, therefore resizing your ring won’t make sense.

With that being said, here are some alternatives for making a ring fit without resizing.

Ring guard, sizing bar, or spacer

This is essentially a piece of rubber or plastic that occupies some of the space on your band, thus decreasing the size of your ring when it’s on your finger. This is an inexpensive option. However, it is only a temporary solution as it can distort the ring if used for too long.

Sizing Beads

Two small beads, made of metal, are placed on the back part of the inside of the ring. This is another economical alternative to resizing. It’s the perfect option when your ring is only slightly too big, like a half-size. Sizing beads are also good for keeping your ring upright, for people with large knuckles and rings with high mountings.

The biggest problem with sizing beads is they can be uncomfortable for the wearer.

These resizing alternatives should still be managed by a jeweler.

Ring Stacking

By stacking rings together, you can keep a loose fitting ring in place. The tighter rings can be ordered on either side of the looser ring to hold it secure on your finger.

This is a pro tip for those who don’t want to resize their ring. Plus, ring stacking is very fashionable. If you can afford it, you will be paying for function and style.
