Rumor Mill: Is Rihanna the New Face of Chanel?

The news world is abuzz with stories about Rihanna, between her confirmation that she and ex-boyfriend Chris Brown are back together and a new rumor that the Bahamian popstar may be the new face of Chanel.

Rihanna recently tweeted “And that’s a #wrap on my shoot for my new #topsecret add campaign!!! #2013 #phuckyobasic.” Accompanying the tweet was a picture of the singer clad in nothing but a white towel and a Chanel necklace. Rihanna also sports some sophisticated makeup in the photo, complete with smokey eyeshadow and the trademark Chanel rouge lipstick.

Previous Chanel spokesmodels include actress Marilyn Monroe, Nicole Kidman, Keira Knightley, and most recently Brad Pitt, who became the first man to be a spokesmodel for Chanel. Chanel No. 5 has long been one of the most coveted spokesmodeling jobs in the world, and if Pitt’s rumored $7 million payday is true, then Rihanna is set to receive a hefty endorsement from the luxury boutique.

Chanel was founded by Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel, who was later given the nickname “Coco”, in 1909 when she began designing clothes with a simple, elegant design for women who were tired of the opulent and over-restrictive clothing common to to the previous century.

The French house Chanel specializes in ready-to-wear haute couture, and is most famous for Chanel No. 5, the “little black dress,” and the Chanel suit. The little black dress was designed by Coco in the 1920s as a versatile and long-lasting clothing option for women who would be able to wear it for anything from a cocktail party or to work, depending on accessories.

Audrey Tautou is the most recent spokesmodel for Chanel No. 5, with Pitt set to replace her in 2013. Rihanna has not yet been confirmed as a potential face for the brand, and some speculate that her hard-parting image, complete with beau Chris Brown, does not fit the brand.
