The Do’s and Don’ts of Proposing Over the Holiday Season

It’s that time of year again: the weather is cool and crisp, everyone has a sense of cheer and urgency, and the lights are going up all over the neighborhoods. In the rush to buy the perfect Christmas gift, many men know just the thing: An engagement ring.

Proposing over the holiday season is tricky business. While it could, and most likely will be the greatest moment of your life, there are some guidelines to stick to ensuring that it will be a memorable and successful proposal.

Do take advantage of the shopping opportunity. One of the most difficult parts of spending time picking out a ring is finding the time to peruse the inventory without your girl getting suspicious. The holidays put everyone in a shopping panic and if you tell her you’re Christmas shopping and always come home with at least one gift, she won’t suspect anything and you’ll have ample time to pick out the perfect ring.

Do something cheesy. Are you the kind of guy that would like to carry the mistletoe around in your pocket, conveniently holding it over your lady’s head every time you’re in the mood for a kiss? Do it! Propose under the mistletoe! It’ll be a romantic, sentimental holiday gesture—and you’ll probably get a piece of mistletoe in your house for years to come!

Don’t propose in front of her family unless you ask for her hand ahead of time. It may seem old school, but it’s still a courteous gesture to ask your future father in law if he’s ok with you marrying his daughter. Obviously you can’t take no for an answer from daddy-o, your first step is convincing him you’re the right guy. Many girls would love for their families to see their proposal. If your woman is the type who’s calling her mom every 20 minutes on an average day to update her on life statuses, try to incorporate her family into the event—either by helping you plan a memorable proposal or by popping the question at a holiday-time family dinner.

If you Don’t want to interfere with the Holidays, Do Propose on New Years [eve].

The holidays are a special time for a lot of people. If you don’t want to interfere with the family time and hustle-and-bustle of the holiday season, wait a few more days for New Year’s or New Year’s Eve to present itself. This is a great holiday for proposals as its symbolism is signifying a fresh start. An affirmative answer to the question and you’ll both start a new year and take advantage of a fresh new direction with your relationship!

Do take some time to sober up from your love-drunk before the big day. You wouldn’t have the urge to propose to someone unless you were madly in love, right? If this is the case, you can wait a few days to put the final touches on your plan and your pondering.  Proposing on a holiday or around the holidays is a big gesture. If things were to ever go south with your relationship, it could have either of you despising said holiday—or worse: the whole season.

The day, date, time and method of proposal is inevitably up to you, guys. While it’s desirable to dream up a glorious affair surrounding the proposal, it should reflect your personality: if you’re a simple guy, keep it simple. All you need is for her to say yes!
