Diamonds in the Sky: White Dwarf Stars

Diamonds in the Sky: White Dwarf Stars

Stars—like diamonds in the sky? Well actually, yes, Rihanna. A recent discovery has shown that the core inside white dwarf stars may actually be made of diamonds. One of these “space jewels” was discovered around 50 light-years away. This diamond star has been named Lucy—after the Beatles song “Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds.”

This diamond is approximately 10 billion trillion carats. For comparison’s sake, the largest stone found on earth was 3,100 carats. The White Dwarf star that created this large gem is actually very small when compared to many stars, it is similar to the size of the Earth’s moon.

A crystallized white dwarf star is made up of carbon and has an atmosphere of hydrogen and helium. The star is found in the constellation Centaurus. Unfortunately, due to the small size and dimness of the star, there are no breathtaking photos.

While mining space gems like this is not something that will likely occur in our lifetime, perhaps one day humans will be able to visit these far reaches and enjoy the beauty and wonder of a crystallized White Dwarf. For now, we can all just rest a bit easier knowing that stars ARE actually “diamonds in the sky.”
