Christie's Auctioning 52 Carat Golconda Diamond

Christie's Auctioning 52 Carat Golconda Diamond

Diamonds are one of the most magnificent items money can buy. Every year, diamonds capture the hearts and minds of millions of men and women around the world. Diamonds have become synonymous with the institution of marriage, and there are a myriad of diamond ring styles for everyone from the working class to Hollywood superstars. While not everyone can afford the largest or most perfect diamonds, there is still something very powerful about even the smallest diamond given to you by your significant other.

However, not all diamonds are made alike, and once in a while a diamond is produced that literally causes headlines to be written about it. These headline worthy diamonds are of course not purchased by the average person. They are reserved for the absolute upper crust of society. Fortunately, this does not mean the rest of us cannot appreciate their beauty.

One such example of a “super diamond” is the 52 Carat Golconda Diamond. This flawless and quite massive diamond was mined in the ancient city of Golconda in India, and the diamond is cut into an octagonal shape. Unless you are the CEO of a Fortune 500 company or an A-list celebrity, it is highly unlikely that you will be able to ever afford such an item, however it is mesmerizing to look at.

The 52 carat Golconda Diamond is being sold by Christie’s in New York as part of a larger jewelry auction. This auction will include approximately 500 items total, and is expected to net over $45 million in sales for Christie’s. Without a doubt, the most noteworthy item in the auction will be the massive Golconda Diamond.

The jewelry auction at Christie’s will feature a number of gorgeous and noteworthy pieces. One such collection is from Leviev. Their collection will include a D-color flawless 26.72 carat platinum ring, which is expected to fetch between 4 and 6 million dollars. The Leviev jewelry collection will also include a stunning diamond pendant necklace which features a 22 carat diamond at the bottom. This piece is expected to sell for somewhere between $2.5 million and $3.5 million.

While these two highlights from the Leviev collection are certain to be popular attractions at the auction, they will simply pale in comparison to the Golconda Diamond. In any other auction in which the Golconda Diamond was not on sale, the Leviev showcase items would be headline worthy and the main focus of the biggest buyers. However, the Golconda Diamond brings Christie’s auction to an entirely different level. Jewelry experts estimate that the headline diamond will bring in somewhere between 9.5 and 12.5 million dollars. This means that in a 500 piece auction of high-priced jewelry, this one diamond will likely bring in between 21% and 28% of all the revenue at the auction.

If you happen to be one of the very lucky few that can afford to even be invited to such an event, be sure to mark December 10th on your calendar. It is on that day that the gorgeous but grossly expensive Golconda Diamond will be sold to someone with far too much disposable income.
